Speaking to Diocese

Speaking at the 2013 Diocese of NJ Convention.

It is with a heavy heart that the Board of Directors of Good Shepherd SLF, USA and Good Shepherd Academy Association, Bamenda share with you that Sister Jane Mankaa died of cancer on April 1st in Cameroon. At the age of 60, her death was unexpected and we grieve—sometimes together, sometimes alone, but always with heartfelt prayers for the 150 children and students who call her “Mama.”

After studying convent management in the United States, in 2003 Sister Jane founded the Benedictine Sisters of Bethany and Good Shepherd Orphanage in Bamenda. Her vision continued in 2016 with the founding of Good Shepherd Academy in Bafut, her home village.

Sister Jane’s unwavering faith, tenacity, and ability to reach out across continents has inspired countless others who will never forget the pure love of Christ she embodied, her heart for the poorest of the poor, and her far-ranging vision.

Our American and Cameroonian Boards are united and clear. It is our honor to carry on the legacy of Sister Jane’s vision of Good Shepherd Academy, a state-of-the-art residential secondary/high school for all children of Cameroon. By the grace of God, because of you her vision became manifest.

Without your support, she, like Moses, would never have reached the Promised Land, but she did. She saw her vision fulfilled in a campus for 100 students with plans for expansion. For this she gave thanks daily for the support of each of one of you. And so do we, with all our heart and soul.

May Sister Jane rest in peace and rise in glory, today and forever more. As we grieve her loss, let us give thanks for her life and mission here on earth, a mission that will continue for generations to come.
