Making It Happen

Walk-with-Ambe-ThankYou-crop

The sun was shining brightly and a slight breeze was blowing, as almost 100 actual and virtual walkers gathered on May 17th for the much-anticipated Walk With Ambe to raise funds to help build Good Shepherd Academy in Bafut, Cameroon. One step at a time, we are MAKING IT HAPPEN TOGETHER as the walk generated over $40,000 in donations. We are overwhelmed and oh so grateful—to Beth and Tim Tiger and Jess Hoertel of Durga Tree who worked many hours to insure the success of the day, to all of you who walked, and to all of you who donated. To Marty Jeiven, owner of Jeiven Pharmaceutical Consulting — our Corporate Sponsor, and to all sponsors, we owe a special debt of gratitude.

 Bringing Us Closer

If you meant to donate and it slipped your mind, there’s still time! Donations are being received until midnight Friday, May 22nd. Just click here and be counted! Every dollar brings us one step closer to building this much needed co-ed residential secondary/high school. And GSA is indeed, much needed.

Responding to Nigerian Kidnapping

On the night of April 14th approximately 276 female students were abducted from a Government Secondary School in Chibok, Nigeria. Boko Haram, an Islamist terrorist group, has taken responsibility for the kidnapping. We are often asked how this tragic and unresolved situation affects Cameroon. First, know that Muslims and Christians in Cameroon get along well, live side by side, and respect one another. There is no violence among the two religious groups in Cameroon. Good Shepherd Academy will be 16 hours south of where the abduction occurred and Cameroon is a stable country, free from many of the problems currently plaguing Nigeria. In addition, Good Shepherd Academy will not be in an isolated area as was the school in Nigeria. Rather, thanks to the foresight and wisdom of Sister Jane Mankaa, a premium was paid for prime land on Ring Road in Bafut where three other mission schools are located. Each of these schools has a guard house and is fenced in, as Good Shepherd Academy will be.

The answer to such tragedy is not to retreat, but to educate both girls and boys throughout the continent of Africa, especially those who are most vulnerable.

In response to the Nigerian crisis, the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, the Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Shori writes:

“The Episcopal Church is horrified at the violence perpetrated against innocent schoolgirls in Nigeria, and the willingness of those who should be addressing this to look the other way. The unfortunate truth is that girls and women are still deemed dispensable in much of the world, or at least of lesser value than members of the other sex. The necessary response is education—of girls and boys, in equal numbers and to an equal degree, that all might take their rightful place in societies that serve all their citizens with equal respect and dignity…”

Our sincere thank you for joining us in our effort to educate girls and boys, in equal numbers to an equal degree. With your help, we can and are making a difference in the critical area of secondary/high school education in Africa—one child at a time. As we continue to work together, let us give thanks for our amazingly successful Walk With Ambe and for all of you who help to MAKE IT HAPPEN for the children of Cameroon and Good Shepherd Academy!
