Benedictine Sister of Bethany

Sister Mary Lawrence, being the second  of seven children, was born in Bafut in the North West Region of Cameroon in 1987 to Neba Marcus and Nchang Tabita. She grew up with both parents and attended primary and secondary school.

Her secondary school education (2003- 2008) was at Government Technical College in Bafut. In 2008 at the age of 21, she became a novice at the Benedictine Sisters of Bethany under the mentorship of Sister Jane Mankaa, Mother Superior.

In 2009 Sister Mary Lawrence received a certificate in Leadership Training at the Women‘s Empowerment Center in Bamenda. From 2014-2017, she served as Administrator and Caregiver for Good Shepherd Home Annex in Batibo serving 50 special needs children. She is currently Administrator of the Benedictine Sisters of Bethany and Good Shepherd Home in Bamenda, succeeding Founder, Sister Jane Mankaa.

Secondary school in Cameroon is not mandatory resulting in a large gap between school capacity and the number of potential students. You can help change that!

For every year a child goes to school, HIV rates decrease, income potential and employment rates increase, girls marry later, early pregnancies decrease, and health is elevated for the entire family.

In Cameroon there is only one teacher for every 45.6 primary school students. In SECONDARY SCHOOL the number increases to nearly 100 STUDENTS PER TEACHER.
